Emery paper is a type of coarse sandpaper made with a hard, abrasive mineral called emery, originally a rock composed of aluminum oxide and magnetite. While the name is sometimes used for modern aluminum oxide or silicon carbide paper, traditional emery paper is a flexible, black abrasive with a paper or cloth backing, ideal for sanding and polishing metal and other hard surfaces.
